War Through the Generation’s very first reading challenge will be World War II. The challenge will run from January 1, 2009, to December 31, 2009.
Rules:
To participate in the WWII Reading Challenge, you must commit to reading at least five books throughout the year. We plan to read more than that, and feel free to do the same! The books can be fiction or non-fiction, and they can be about any aspect of WWII. WWII should be the primary or secondary theme, and it doesn’t matter whether the book takes place during the war or after the war. Children’s literature is acceptable! (Please visit the WWII Reading List page for some recommendations.) You can count books you are reading for other challenges, so long as they meet the aforementioned criteria.
You can decide which books you’d like to read right away, or you can choose them during the course of the challenge. However, when you sign up, we ask that you set a reading goal for the challenge. At the end of the challenge, those who met or exceeded their reading goals will be entered in a drawing (prizes to be announced later).
**Participants anywhere in the world are eligible for most prizes in the drawing!**
How to sign up:
If you have a blog, please write about the challenge and your reading goal. Come back to this page and leave a comment with the link to your post.
If you don’t have a blog, please leave a comment on this page with your reading goal.
Everyone who signs up will be listed on the WWII Challenge Participants page.
Sign ups will be ongoing.
**Once you’ve signed up, please visit the Buttons page to snag some for your blog for use in your sign up post and book reviews!**
Share your reviews with fellow participants:
If you have a blog and have reviewed a book you’re counting toward the challenge, please email the review link to warthroughgenerations AT gmail DOT com. We’d be happy to post the first paragraph (or the first few sentences, depending on paragraph length) and a link to your blog.
If you don’t have a blog but would like to share your thoughts on a book you’ve read for the challenge, please write up a review and email it to warthroughgenerations AT gmail DOT com. Please include the name you wish to be displayed as author of the review.
If you have any questions, please email us at warthroughgenerations AT gmail DOT com. We hope you will join us for a year filled with great books!

I’m excited to say that one of the books I’ll be reading is by a good friend. She’s finishing writing it even as we speak.

I think that my mom went through WWII, even though she was a kid. She was born in 1935, and my great uncle and a few older cousins (about the same age as mom) fought in it. This will be an interesting challenge for me as I had relatives who fought in this war.

Thanks for hosting this challenge. I’m glad to learn more about his war and how it connects with what came before and what came after it. I like to read primary accounts, so I have Churchill and Hitler on my list, along with other ones. I will probably add to the list as I read reviews and get sucked into more books!
My list is here: http://weblog.xanga.com/magistramater/687218300/world-war-ii-reading-challenge.html
Ugh! *This* war, instead of *his* war.
I learned about this challenge from Carol’s post on her list of WW II books, and I’m waffling. I have so many projects going, but I think I’d like to do this one, too. I’ll get back to you with a link to a post on the project from my blog soon.
I am honored that The i Tetralogy is listed in your challenge. If your readers would go to http://www.mathiasbfreese.com and seek out the talk I gave to survivors and members of the armed forces, “On the Holocaust,” they may derive a deeper insight into why I wrote this book. Rather than giving you a copy for any giveaway you may have, I’d rather engage your readership in this way: if you are a survivor, email with some data and I will forward a copy to you free; if you are an instructor of Holocaust studies or teach the subject in soime fashion, I will give you a copy free as well. IThe site lists links that have reviews of the book. Recent blog: “Ask the Golem.”
The book has been reviewed worldwide and I urge you to read the autobiographical essay at the end first, for it is a very graphic experience. Rolf Gompertz, a survivor, has called it a “holy book.”
Kind regards,
matt Freese
Great challenge!! I am looking forward to this one. Here is my link to my post.

Hello, sign me up. I just posted on my blog how I wanted to stretch my reading this year into other genres. I already have “Schindler’s List” which I read years ago. I’ll have to make hubby dig it out of the attic, it’s stored for a garage sale.
I think I have “The Hiding Place” by Corrie Tin Boom. I’ve wanted to read that for years. I’ll use this to read some classics.
Sign me up for 8. I’ll post about this on my blog in a couple of weeks. Schedule is full until then.

Hi
Just saying hello. I don’t claim these two books for the challenge because I read them last year, but I suggest them because they are about WWII.

I know I missed the sign ups for the prize drawing, but I’d still like to give this a try! I just started my book blog and am excited to start some great challenges.
Hilarie: Glad to have you on board. I’ve added you to the participants page, and sent you an email.
Hi from another new book blogger. A bit late joining, but please sign me up. This looks great!
Thanks for signing up, Tracey! I’ve added you to the participants page.
Thanks, Serena, for letting me know about the challenge. I have already read two books set during WWII since you started the challenge so this is perfect. I will post soon about my goals and books already read this year later today.
Mari

There are links to my first two books that I have already reviewed.
Glad to have you on board, Mari! You’ve been added to the participants page, and I’ll add your reviews soon.
I finished my fifth book on February 24, no review I’m afraid. The book was The Spanish Bow by Andromeda Romano-Lax and it is an excellent story, set in Spain. I recommend it highly. I will continue to add more titles or reviews if I do any but will count myself finished for the time being so I can concentrate on my many other challenges. I enjoyed this challenge very much, thank you so much for inviting me Serena. And the set-up for reviews and links is beautiful, very professional looking. You and Anna have done a terrific job. I will definitely participate in the other branches of the your war challenges when they start.
I’m late to join but love WWII books and have gotten some good ones in the last few weeks.
Sandra, congrats on finishing the challenge! Thanks for letting us know that you enjoyed the book. We’re so glad you like the blog.
Melissa, thanks for signing up. I’ve added you to the participants list, and I also sent you an email.
Welcome aboard, Melissa!
Sandra, I’m so glad that you enjoyed the challenge. I have the Spanish Bow in my TBR pile as well. Good luck with your other challenges.
I’m happy that you joined. I noticed you were reading WWII books and thought you’d like to hop on board the challenge train!
Thanks for the invite today Anna, I posted my selections on my blog. Here is the link:

Hi there! I know I am late but I would like to join. I love reading about World War II! I am new blogger.
Hi Anna and Serena,
I hope you get this message. I have been sending messages to you and keep getting a message back that the messages did not go through. They must not be, cuz, I don’t get any replies.
I sent you the titles of my last four books to complete the 10 for the challenge, and am wondering if you got that one.
Also:
I am thinking of adding to my challenge number; is 25 or 30 books too many? I read ALL of the time, and am certain that I could do more than the required 10 books. My Flame-pointe Siamese cat, Calvin, enjoys reading too, and he is right there with me. Altho, occasionally he likes to get between me and the book. It is a ‘cat-thing’, I guess.
I still do not have a blog, do I really need one? If not, then I will continue to send the emails with my additional titles.
Please let me know if this is ok.
Phyllis Lucas =^..^=
Best to all the readers.
Hi there. I will be posting my reviews in the link below.
http://helenreviewswouldwar2.blogspot.com/
I haven’t written any reviews yet, but I will be posting some soon. Thanks.
Diane, Elizabeth, Darcy, and Helenita: Welcome! I’ve added you to the participants page.
Phyllis: I hope you’re checking the comments. Sorry about your email problems. We haven’t received that email from you. You could try emailing me at diaryofaneccentric at hotmail dot com. Don’t know if that will help. Feel free to read as many books as you want for the challenge. You don’t have to have a blog, but if you’d like to write up book reviews, you can email them to us, and we’ll post them on this blog.
Helenita: Welcome and thanks for joining the challenge. Its great to see how many have opted to read WWII-era books with us.
Phyllis: You can read as many books as you would like for the challenge. There is no maximum. You don’t need a blog to complete and participate in the challenge…we can post reviews on this site for you if you like or you can continue with what you have been doing.
Welcome!
Helenita: Welcome!
What a great goal from a new blogger…thanks for joining.
History of this nature must not be repeated…I agree Elizabeth.
I haven’t been able to post here to sign up because my posts weren’t showing up…trying from a different computer to see if it works out?
Anna: I emailed you so you know about this already!
Arielle: I’ve added you to the participants list and I’m emailing you right now.
I’ve finally made the decision to join your wonderful challenge! Here’s my post.
Hi! I hope it’s not too late to sign-up. Sounds a great challenge.

Question: why is this garbage about Paris Hilton’s sex tapes on this website?
Hi! I would love to join this challenge. I’ve mentioned the challenge and what books (5) I am going to read fortit in my blog here http://abookblogofonesown.blogspot.com/2009/07/chapter-1-i-challenge-me-to-read.html.

Phyllis–no idea about the spam, but I’ve deleted it. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
Thanks for all the recent sign-ups everyone!
I have no idea why there is Paris Hilton spam, but let’s hope that’s the last of it.

It’s late in the year but I’m signing up for ten books, which is kind of lame since I’ve already read eight of them. I’ve posted here. I’ll be listed the books I’ve already finished shortly.

I am signing up for this wonderful challenge. I don’t have a blog. I have read more than five books but I listed the five which you have verified. Thanks for this opportunity and all the best.
I will try for the 5 books, although some will be in Portuguese and I am not sure I
Work doens’t leave me that much time to read, but 5 will be a good goal!
I have already some books on WWII.
I really love the subject.
So, if I account for those (they were 4) and take a look at how many more I haven’t read yet (7), that makes for my goal!
11 it is!
I will start tomorrow, cause today I have to help a friend move to his new house.
I don’t know what my issue with posting links is, but I’ll do it the old fashioned way. My review of “An American Family in World War II” is here: http://wp.me/pjXjU-w/” rel=”nofollow”> http://wp.me/pjXjU-w
