Review: THE KILLER ANGELS by Michael Shaara

Layers of Thought read and reviewed The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara for the U.S. Civil War Reading Challenge 2011.  Here’s an excerpt:

“Unusually for a work of historic fiction, this book closely follows real-life events but you experience them via several of the leading people who were actually involved, rather than via fictional characters. This gives it the feeling of several intertwining autobiographies, a device which Shaara uses very successfully. Of course, it is still a work of fiction as Shaara has to imagine and create the motivations and feelings of the characters, and has to fill in many details which are either unknown or debated by historians.”
