Matt’s Book Blog reviewed Co. Aytch: A Confederate Memoir of the Civil War by Sam R. Watkins for the U.S. Civil War Reading Challenge 2011. Here’s an excerpt:

As the editor implies in the introduction of this book, no other memoir of a southern soldier conveys infantry life in such memorable and readable detail. The author Sam R. Watkins was a Tennessean who enlisted during the heady enthusiasm that followed the taking of Fort Sumter. After two months of training, he fought in many engagements, big and small: Shiloh, Corinth, Murfreesboro, Missionary Ridge, Atlanta, and the debacle at Nashville.
