Review: THE GALVANIZED YANKEES by Dee Brown

Matt’s Book Blog reviewed The Galvanized Yankees by Dee Brown for the U.S. Civil War Challenge 2011.  Here’s an excerpt:

Dee Brown’s 1964 history tells about 6,000 Confederate prisoners of war who accepted the offer to enlist in the Union Army and go fight Indians on the Western plains. They did so for various reasons: to escape the disease, degradation, and boredom of the POW camps and prisons; to express either newly avowed loyalty to the Union or one that was already there despite fighting in the CSA; to jump at the first chance to desert; and to join the adventure of pacifying the West.
