Review: 1861: THE CIVIL WAR AWAKENING by Adam Goodheart

Today’s Reading List reviewed 1861:  The Civil War Awakening by Adam Goodheart for the U.S. Civil War Reading Challenge 2011.  Here’s an excerpt:

In 1861: The Civil War Awakening, historian Adam Goodheart sets out to tell a different kind of Civil War tale. As he says early on, there are countless volumes detailing the movement of this or that battalion and so he chooses instead to delve into less traveled territory and tell the story of the Civil War’s beginnings from the perspective of mid-19th Century American society and a select group of individuals involved.

Without question, he succeeds in a mere 400-plus pages to provide what should be a must-read narrative for anyone unsatisfied with the traditional Civil War education that they had received in high school.
