Review: CLOUDSPLITTER by Russell Banks

Matt’s Book Blog recently read and reviewed Cloudsplitter by Russell Banks for the U.S. Civil War Reading Challenge. Here’s a snippet:

Other issues Banks handles in the novel:  a demanding leader exploits loyal minions, action and  adventure on the Underground Railroad, and the chasms of misunderstanding between blacks and whites. Banks also has a sure hand with ordinary domestic problems such as the constant money worries faced by poor and working class families. The only downside of this big (some 750 pages) book is one grows impatient with Owen’s dour introspection and ruminations.
