Review: SILVER THREADS by Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch

Back to Books recently read and reviewed Silver Threads by Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch for the WWI Reading Challenge in 2012.  Here’s an excerpt:

This is a picture book suited to the elementary grades and based on the true story of the author’s grandfather, George Forchuk, who was sent to a Ukrainian internment camp for the duration of WWI as a Canadian immigrant from the Ukraine.  The story is a tender one of love and hope as the wife waits year after year for her husband to return to her as he promised, to spend another Christmas with her yet.

Review: PRISONERS IN THE PROMISED LAND by Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch

Back to Books recently read and reviewed Prisoners in the Promised Land:  The Ukranian Internment Diary of Anya Soloniuk, Spirit Lake, Quebec, 1914 by Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch for the WWI Reading Challenge in 2012.  Here’s a sample:

Once again, I have learned something new from one of Marsha’s books.  I had no knowledge whatsoever of the Ukrainian internment camps in Canada during WWI; of course everybody knows of the Japanese ones during WWII but why not the earlier Ukrainian ones?  Perhaps because they make very little sense at all from a political point of view.
