This is a VERY good book.  It presents a side of the American involvement in Vietnam that many people are unaware of.  In fact, it presents a war that is almost unrecognizable when compared to other combat narratives.

Review: ONCE A WARRIOR KING by David Donovan

Matt’s Book Blog recently reviewed Once a Warrior King by David Donovan for the Vietnam War Reading Challenge.  Check out this snippet:

It is at the micro-level that this memoir has it greatest interest. Donovan describes in fascinating detail his own and other’s culture shock. He doesn’t pull any punches in that he bluntly says that he witnessed sordid incidents when 19-year-old American boys treated the local Vietnamese like trash and their officers didn’t discipline them because they were afraid of being fragged.
